What is laser surgery for varicose veins?
Laser surgery for varicose veins is a minimally invasive technique used in cosmetic surgery to treat varicose veins, which are dilations of the veins of the superficial and deep venous system located mainly in the lower extremities. It is a fast recovery technique that does not require hospital admission, it is less painful than conventional surgery and recovery is faster. To perform it, local anesthesia is used and it lasts approximately 45 minutes.
Why is it done?
Laser surgery for varicose veins can be performed for two reasons: aesthetic and clinical. It is true that surgery can be performed for cosmetic purposes, but the vast majority are performed for health reasons. This intervention allows to end pain, swelling, bruising and the feeling of heaviness in the legs. This allows the blood to circulate through healthy veins, restoring the proper functioning of the circulatory system.
What does it consist of?
The operation of varicose veins with laser consists of the introduction of a needle into the specific vein and, through a guide, inserting a laser fiber into it that provides heat. This closes the dilated vein, forcing the blood to circulate through other, deeper and healthier vessels. Although the results of this type of surgery are usually very reliable, there is always a risk of complications (thrombophlebitis, varicorragia or bleeding from a varicose vein, varicose ulcers…).
Preparation for laser surgery for varicose veins
Preparation for laser surgery is based on a study of your medical and family history. The questions asked by the doctor refer to the symptoms, the lifestyle and the veins to be treated are determined.
Care after the intervention
After the intervention, the patient should not be hospitalized and can walk out of the clinic, as well as resume their activities as long as they are not strenuous. It is recommended that the patient wear stockings for varicose veins at the end of the intervention and take short daily walks. Postoperative inflammation and bruising are complications that are reduced with laser surgery, since the attack on the varicose walls is more precise and the surrounding tissues are not damaged. This allows the postoperative to be faster and the recovery to be more pleasant.
