Hand baggage, dimensions, and weight to easily embark your suitcase on the flight
Traveling is always a pleasure, whether you are visiting a large metropolis or discovering an exotic country, there is always something to discover and know. And if sometimes your destination is reachable by land or sea, other times it is necessary, instead, to take a flight.
Traveling by plane, however, can involve several issues to which particular attention should be paid, because each airline has its own rules and restrictions on what is allowed to carry on board, on the size and weight of hand luggage.
The dimensions of the hand luggage
When planning to take a flight, it is a good idea to always consult the guidelines applied by your airline. If your hand baggage is not in line with the permitted limits, you may be charged additional costs or may require you to put your suitcase in the hold of the aircraft.
The dimensions to consider for hand luggage are length, width, and depth. The dimensions indicated by the airlines refer to the external dimensions of the hand luggage and therefore include handles, wheels, external protections, side pockets, and other components. Some airlines follow the same rules, but new updates on hand baggage restrictions are often released by the same.
Among the main low-cost airlines, Volotea and Vueling anticipate the boarding of hand luggage with dimensions not exceeding 55x40x20 cm; EasyJet and Wizz Air, on the other hand, allow you to carry suitcases with dimensions of 56x45x25 cm on board. While the Irish company Ryanair has recently changed its policy for the dimensions of hand luggage: a small bag measuring 35x20x20 cm can be carried onboard the flight, while hand luggage (55x40x20 cm) can only be checked in if you have purchased the priority, which also allows you to get on your flight before the others.
Our national airline, Alitalia, has 55x35x25 cm as the maximum size allowed for hand baggage, as does Air France, while on Iberia and British Airways it is possible to bring baggage with dimensions between 56x45x25 cm in the cabin.
The weight of the hand luggage
Concerning the weight of hand baggage, most airlines allow you to carry suitcases weighing between 8 and 10 kg onboard your flight for free. Few airlines are exceptions to this rule, including:
- British Airways, which allows you to carry hand luggage weighing 23 kg on board;
- Iberia and EasyJet, which have no weight limits for hand luggage, but they have as a directive for passengers to be able to lift hand luggage and store it easily in the overhead bin above the seats.
The weight of baggage in the hold, on the other hand, varies between 20 and 30 kg depending on the rate chosen at the time of booking. This baggage is not included in the ticket price but must be purchased separately if you need more space. Especially for this type of suitcases that are shipped in the hold, it may be useful to add a luggage guarantee to your insurance to be reimbursed in the event of theft, fire, robbery, robbery, or non-delivery by the air carrier.
The permitted and prohibited articles in hand baggage
(National Agency for Civil Aviation) collects all information and the necessary documentation for what is allowed to bring onboard within their carry-on baggage and what is prohibited.
In particular, it is not allowed to board:
- pistols, firearms, or toy weapons;
- sharp objects, such as open razors;
- explosives and flammable substances, including alcoholic beverages that exceed an alcohol content by volume of more than 70%;
- chemical and toxic substances that may pose a risk to the health of passengers and crew.
It is possible to carry liquids in hand luggage in individual containers with a maximum capacity not exceeding 100 ml, up to a total not exceeding one liter. The containers must then be placed inside an envelope or a transparent plastic bag with an airtight closure system.
All of the following are considered liquids that cannot be carried in hand luggage:
- water and other drinks, soups, syrups;
- creams, lotions, and oils ;
- perfumes ;
- spray ;
- gels, including hair and shower gels ;
- foams, such as shaving or hair foams;
- paste substances, such as toothpaste ;
- mascara and foundation with a creamy consistency.
It is therefore important to always check before leaving the rules that the airline chose for your trip sets for hand luggage, in this way you will avoid surprises before boarding. To enjoy a peaceful and peaceful holiday, it is always advisable to take out travel insurance to leave safely.
