Search engines perform their task with help of robots commonly called as crawlers or spiders. Spiders are used by search engines to index websites that are hosted on server or online. It means when you host a website on internet, you must submit them to search engines by completing their submission page. After submitting, the search engine spider will index your entire site. A spider is an automated program that is run by the search engine system. It helps the search engines by visiting the website, read the content of the site, the sites meta tag and in the end follows the links that the site connects. Then the spider after completing, it returns all the information back to central depository, where all the data is indexed. At the same time it will visit all the links that are placed on your website and index those sites as well.

This process of indexing will repeated at periodic intervals to see or check if there is anything that has changed. The frequency of such periodic indexing will be determined by the moderators of the search engines.

A spider is a database where all the information is stored in the form of tables. The actual contents, the links and references websites that it finds on your website during its search. This process is repeated for millions of pages per day by spiders. Examples of spiders or search engines include: Google, AltaVista, excite and Lycos.

When you ask search engine for the information that you require, it is goes to it index database where all the information about the web pages online are stored but not searching the web at the time of retuning you the results. The rakings of your website differs with different search engines because the algorithm used by different search engines is different.

One main thing that every search engine algorithm search is for the frequency and location of the keywords on your web page, but at the same time it also detects artificial keywords stuffing and spam. And also the way the pages are linked to other web pages in the web. This can be determined by checking how pages link to each other, as engine can both determine what a page is about like if the keywords used to link the pages are similar to keywords used on the original page.
